BEIJING - The pressure of the moment nearly overwhelmed her, but as with most top athletes, Funmi Jimoh found a way to deal with it.
Jimoh, who ran track at Rice, needed to come through on her final attempt in the long jump qualifying round, and she did, cleanly putting a jump of 21’8 1/4" to advance to the final in her first Olympic appearance...

Layo, I called it, I kid you not. I told George that you will jump 6.6 on 3rd jump and you will be in the final. You have a big follower here in Houston and the biggest of them all is yours trully DAD!
YOU ARE ALWAYS MY CHAMP, My OLYMPIAN.
Love always.
Dad

I actually called 6.6something, too. After your 2nd jump I knew that's about what you'd need and I knew you could do it. You are such a clutch performer. Do you know how many people would have crumbled under the pressure (myself included)? You are a superstar and please KNOW you have already gone above and beyond. Thinking of you often. It was hard not being there this time.
Love,
Aisha
